It was the 40th Anniversary year of the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, and I decided to offer traditional mountain dulcimer playing for the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship.

I played my Ben Seymour Galax Mountain Dulcimer with my Don Neuhauser turkey quill and my Phyllis Gaskins-recommended clothespin noter. It was tuned to dddd and I played "O Virgin-ee-i-a", "Old Black Cat Couldn't Catch A Rat" (the latter learned from Don Pedi). To my surprise and delight, I was invited back to play in the 2nd round where I added "Soldier's Joy" and Albert Brumley's "I'll Fly Away."

I ended up tied for 4th and people enjoyed hearing the old-time dulcimer sound!
