It took many years to set this inspiring quote to music. In March 2006 I was able to sing it at all my concerts in Berlin, Germany, most notably St. Annen Kirche, the church from which Niemöller was arrested in 1937, and which refused to accept the replacement pastor sent by the Nazis.
When they first came for the Communists
I said nothing....
When they came for the union workers
I said nothing....
Nothing, I said.....
Not a word did I speak
Nothing, I said.....
Not a word from me.
When they next came for the Gypsies,
I said....
When they came for all of the Jews,
I said...
When they came for the Catholics,
I said....
I was a Protestant, who did not protest,
I said nothing....
When at last they came for me,
There was no one, they said....
When at last they came for me,
There was no one, they said....
Nothing, they said....
There was no one left to speak
Nothing, they said....
There was no one left for me...
